The North Callaway varsity boys basketball team was hungry for its first victory of 2018-19 when it stepped on the court on Tuesday at the Centralia Tournament to take on former North Central Missouri Conference member Boonville.
The Pirates weren't about to get caught slipping, though, and instead were ready to the point they were able to jump out to a 17-12 lead in the first quarter on the T-Birds before outscoring them 21-13 in the second to head into halftime with a 39-25 advantage. North Callaway did make the necessary adjustments to stem the tide 18-17 in the third, but just to be sure Boonville crept back and claimed the fourth 16-12 on its way to winning 71-56.
"The kids played hard. Boonville is a good ball club. We played a little short again," said coach Mathias Miller. "We got tired again and they pulled away."
With Dawson Wright out and Mark Hollenberg dealing with a concussion, it was Khobi Kellerman that hit a pair of triples on his way to 17 points and 10 rebounds and Gabe Cash sank three three-pointers to score 13 with five assists. Cody Cash also hit one triple to give an 11-point performance and racking up a trio of triples to end up with 11 points, as well, was Andrew LoCastro.
The flip side of all this featured Boonville sophomore Charlie Bronakowski going for 18 points, senior Clayton Gochenour had a 13-point experience and rounding things out with 11 points was DJ Wesolack.
North Callaway next took the court in the Centralia Tournament against Harrisburg yesterday.
