This week kicked off with quite the challenge for Haley Schafer and her Mexico varsity girls soccer team as they had no choice but to welcome Marshall for a North Central Missouri Conference contest.
Previously the Lady Bulldogs had been knocked down and taken out by these same Lady Owls, so it was hard to say if this squad was gun shy or looking for vengeance. Either way, despite a hat trick by Rosanna McKeown and a goal by Rachel Kristofferson that was assisted by Kyleigh Wayman, Mexico just still didn't quite have it, getting edged out by Marshall 5-4.
"In the last match up against Marshall we lost 2-5, but we had a lot of goal scoring opportunities that were not finished so we knew we had a shot tonight if we could find a way to get the ball in the back of the net, finishing a few more of those shots," said Schafer. "Defensively we did a much better job in this contest winning the ball in the air and playing purposeful passing. Overall, ending on the losing side is never fun but this was a hard fought game and I was so impressed with the effort and intensity."
Last weekend Mexico also competed at the Moberly Invitational and according to the Missouri State High School Activities Association website the team lost last Friday to Chilicothe 5-0. The Lady Bulldogs then deadlocked with Winfield 1-1 last Saturday, as well as Father Tolton 2-2.
Mexico hosts Father Tolton for a non-league contest today and on Thursday Warrenton comes to town.
