First-year head coach Vince Wolk and the Montgomery County varsity baseball team had the rare misstep last weekend in round robin competition at Palmyra when not only did it stumble against its hosts, but it also didn't faire so well against North Central Missouri Conference rival Moberly, either.
This included a 7-4 loss to the Spartans that featured singles by Aaron Milner and Carson Parker and a double by Ethan Abercrombie. Drew Murie pitched 4.1 innings and allowed five earned runs on seven hits and five walks, as well.
In its 11-6 defeat to Palmyra taking the mound for three innings for the Wildcats for three innings was Blake Yelton, giving up seven runs, four earned, on six hits and two walks with four strikeouts. Evan Abercrombie also pitched for two innings and allowed four runs, all earned on three hits and six walks with one strikeout. Ethan Abercrombie then threw the final six outs for the Panthers and only got taken for one hit and a pair of walks with five strikeouts.
As far as the hit parade was concerned, Murie helped set the pace with two and adding one was Milner.
This unlucky streak dates back to last week and is tied in to all the time this squad spent on the road as Montgomery County fell at Wright City 9-5 last Friday. Tossing five innings and giving up eight runs, four earned, on seven hits and a walk with four strikeouts was Parker. Ethan Abercrombie chipped in with a pair of hits and laying down a hit each were Yelton and Milner.
At the start of this four-game road trip, the Wildcats were able to take care of business 13-0 at Clopton. JD Wright spent four innings on the mound and allowed a hit and three walks with four strikeouts in four innings. Yelton then threw two innings and gave up no hits and struck out one, as well, setting the table for an 11-hit performance that included Milner with a double and a single, Wright added two singles and Ethan Abercrombie, Yelton and Parker sported a hit each.
Montgomery County defeated Bowling Green 7-0 at home on April 9, as well.
The Wildcats, 8-5 overall, 4-1 EMO, have a 5:00 p.m. game at North Callaway on Thursday.
