Gage Gilmore came up big when the Mexico varsity boys golf team needed him most by carding a 47-44-91 on Wednesday at the North Central Missouri Conference meet.
Mason Carver wasn't shy about stepping up when his squad needed him most, either, charting a 51-46-97 to help the Bulldogs post a team score of 404, placing them well in front of Fulton at 464. The only problem with that was the Hornets were last in a six team field that was dominated by Kirksville and Hannibal at 324 and 330, respectively, followed by Moberly with 354 and Marshall was fourth at 384.
"With it misting most of the morning and the course being wet throughout the day, these guys made the best of poor golf conditions. Mason Carver, Gage Gilmore, David Koons and Mason Lower all contributed to our team score today," said coach Dwight Loyd. "Our score of 404 is right around our average for the year. Mason Lower really stepped up today and helped with the overall team score. He was a last minute replacement for Chris Dubbert, who had a welding competition to attend."
In Mexico's five-man lineup it was Koons that finished in the middle of that pack by shooting a 104, but Lower wasn't far off that pace at all at 112. Grant Qualls also round out the effort with a 134.
"Gilmore shot our low score of the day and missed out on being named an all conference golfer by a scorecard playoff hole. Gilmore and Camden Stuart of Moberly tied for 14th on the all conference list. Unfortunately when it went to the scorecard tie breaker hole, Gage had the worse score for that hole," Loyd said. "With the hard work that these guys have put in this season and hopefully some nice weather conditions, we have the potential for a couple of individual golfers to move on to sectionals."
Mexico starts Class 3, District 4, on Monday at the Links in Dardene in O'Fallon hosted by St. Charles. Other teams present will include Hannibal, Orchard Farm, Parkway North, St. Charles West, St. Dominic, University City, Warrenton, Mary Institute and Saint Louis Country Day (MICDS) and the host Pirates.
