When Gunner Stugart looked around on Monday at the Class 2 Missouri State High School Athletic Association state championship golf meet in Springfield at the Rivercut Golf Course the Missouri Military Academy athlete may have seen a lot of things, but there's one thing he was sure not to see.
Other than teammate Leon Peralta one thing Stugart was sure to never run into another area team, which, by definition meant there was no chance of seeing another area athlete. Instead, it was just the two of them representing all of us at this event, and instead of getting nervous or overwhelmed by everything they were surrounded with these two individuals rose to the occasion.
For Stugart on day one of this two-day event this translated to finishing 11th with an 81 while Peralta wasn't that far behind in 38th place at a 90. Grabbing the top-spot on this par-72 course was Cole Elling of St. Pius X (Kansas City) with a 70 while spots two and three went to Kal Sebastian Kolar of Maplewwod-Richmond Heights and Drew Newlin of Whitfield at 74 and 75, respectively.
The team marks somewhat reflect that individuality as St. Pius X has the lead after day one with a score of 341, Whitfield is second at 344, Father Tolton is third with 355 and tying for fourth were Palmyra and Kennett at 360. Eldon slid in just after that with a 361, California was within striking distance at 372 and Willow Springs was a distant ninth at 391.
