The Mexico Optimist Club Youth Football and Cheer Program will host a Punt, Pass and Kick competition on July 21 at Mexico Optimist Fields, 625 E. Summit Rd., 65265. The event starts at 3:00 p.m. and is part of Family Fun Day and no pre-registration is required. On Aug. 5 at 6:00 p.m. The Mexico Rookies 10U Baseball Club will hold tryouts for the fall/spring season. Both seasons will be made up of league play in Columbia, but in the spring there will also be tournaments in Kansas City, Jefferson City, Columbia and St. Louis. Located at 1127 Adams St., 65265, the Mexico Area Family YMCA is offering several Soccer Camps on Aug. 5 designed to improve skills, techniques, agility, speed and coordination in regards to how those things pertain to the game. The camps will take place Aug. 5-9 starting from 9:00 a.m.- 10:00 a.m. with first and second graders followed by third through eighth graders from 10:30 a.m.- 12 p.m.



Fourth Time is a charm

Not only is the Norm Stewart Classic going to be at Mizzou Arena for 2019 after taking place at Columbia College for its initial three years of existence, but the Mexico Varsity Boys Basketball Team will help but night one to rest when it plays Centralia at 11:00 p.m. on Dec. 6.

The format for this event is 48 hours of straight varsity basketball that rotates between boys and girls, the proceeds go to Coaches vs Cancer and all the contests are broadcast on ESPN3. Even though neither the Lady Bulldogs or Lady Panthers will be participating in this years event, other local teams getting in on the action include the Community R-6 boys facing Otterville at 4 a.m. on Dec. 9 immediately followed by the CR-6 girls against Otterville at 6 a.m.

On Friday the games commence at 5 p.m. with the East Buchanan boys playing Clarksville Academy (TN.), at 7 p.m. the Incarnate Word girls face Blue Springs and the Jefferson City girls go up against Hazelwood Central at 9 p.m. Father Tolton then takes on the St. Joseph's Academy girls at at 1:00 a.m. on Dec. 7, Harrisburg plays the Calvery Lutheran boys at 3 a.m. and at 5 a.m. Columbia Independent will be gunning for the Green Ridge boys.

From there at 7 a.m. it's Booker T. Washington (OK) facing the St. Louis Christian boys, on ESPNU at 9 a.m. it will be Father Tolton vs the Mehlville boys and at noon the Wentzville-Liberty boys take on Liberty. The Rock Bridge girls also have a date with Kickapoo at 2 p.m., Hickman has its eye on the Clarksville Academy boys (TN) at 4 p.m. and at 6 p.m. East St. Louis and the Raymore Peculiar boys will go head-to-head and try and figure out which team is the better one.

Keeping with the out-of town theme, Bishop Miege (KS) steps centerstage at 8 p.m. to take on the Cardinal Ritter boys, two hours later on Dec. 8 the Battle boys are going to have a conflict with Raytown South and at 2 a.m. it's Glendale vs the East St. Louis girls. That sets up an 8 a.m. matchup between Battle and the Lincoln girls, the School of the Osage girls will go at Hickman at 10 a.m. and the Nixa boys will try and stand their ground at noon against St. Elizabeth.

All that leaves is Rock Bridge vs the Webster Groves boys at 2 p.m. and Whitehaven (TN.) plays the Trinity Catholic boys at 4 p.m. Details:
