Ruth Marie Chapman, passed away Saturday, June 15, 2019, at the age of 96. She was born April 13, 1923, in Mexico, MO., to Kathryn Eliza and David Bennett Hill, and was the oldest of four children, James Russell, Mary Kathryn and David Right Hill.

  Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, June 22, 2019, at Pickering Funeral Home with Rev. Zane Whorton officiating. Visitation will be Saturday from Noon until service time at the funeral home. Burial will follow at East Lawn Memorial Park.

  Ruth was married to Robert E. Chapman prior to WWII where he served as a pilot in the Army Air Corps. They had two children, Rebecca Jane Chapman Hagan of Kansas City, MO, and Michael Lee Chapman of Mexico, MO.

  Ruth was an active member of the First Christian Church of Mexico, MO. She also volunteered with the Lions Club, the Missouri Veterans Home, the Audrain Hospital Gift Shop for many years and she was a member of a King's Daughters Circle. She worked all of the elections in Audrain County for decades and was instrumental in starting the first public kindergarten in Mexico in the early 1950's. Ruth was a Girl Scout leader, Den Mother to a Cub Scout Troop and worked at making the public schools better through PTA. She was an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed intricate cross-stitching needlework. Some may remember her from J. C. Penney’s on the square where she worked for many years. For fun she was an avid league bowler, enjoyed square dancing, “played” at golf and was a big St. Louis Cardinals fan.

  She is survived by her brother James of Kansas City, MO, children Michael, Rebecca and her husband John C. Hagan III, six grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

  She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Robert, sister Mary and brother David (Dib).
