The Cash brothers, senior Cody and junior Gabe, led North Callaway boys in scoring Tuesday with 22 and 14 points respectively in what became a tight-knit affair in the fourth quarter, but Centralia managed to escape with a 46-42 triumph in non-conference play.
In the preceding girls game, Centralia also handed North Callaway a loss, 64-34.
Both Thunderbird teams will participate next week at the 64th Annual Centralia Invitational.The boys team is the sixth seed playing No. 3 Hallsville at 9 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10. North Callaway girls are the seventh seed and meet No. 2 Salisbury at 7:30 p.m. next Monday.
The Thunderbird boys trailed 30-19 by intermission on Dec. 3 but returned to the floor with some vigor to outscore their guests 15 to 4 by the end of the third quarter to tie the score. However, Centralia made a couple of more defensive stops in the final segment to return home with the four point win.
Noah Scrogum provided four points and had six rebounds, and Tanner Taylor chipped in two for North Callaway (0-1).
Centralia pulled away from a 12-12 score in the second quarter to build a 34-20 cushion by halftime to work with, and North Callaway could not recover and lost by 30 points.
Leading scorers for the Lady Thunderbirds (1-1) were the Schmauch sisters. Sophomore point guard Ryelle finished with 12 points, two assists and had four steals. Her senior sibling Daelyn provided four points and had seven rebounds.
