When the Community R-6 girls needed plays down the stretch, Sarah Angel was there to provide them.
Angel led the Lady Trojans with 21 points, six rebounds, four steals and finished 11-for-14 at the free throw line in a 60-54 victory at home against Silex. In the fourth quarter, where Silex outscored Community 26-21, Angel was 7-for-10 from the line to help seal the win. Kylie Brooks scoring a couple times in transition in the final two minutes also helped seal the win.
Alyssa Beamer had 10 points and two steals, Olivia Kuda had 10 points and six rebounds, Brooks finished with nine points, and Kayla Jett had seven points.
Head coach Bob Curtis said Silex (2-2) is a team that will compete for a district title in February so Community (4-0) sealing this win was big for the season overall. Angel’s recent play — 20.7 points and 4.7 steals per game in the previous three games — has been key as her court vision has been spot on. Curtis said other players contributed so far.
“Alyssa Beamer has been a spark plug off the bench in our first four games taking charges, providing some offense and perimeter shooting, and playing hard but under control,” Curtis said. “Aaliyah Welch has also provided a spark but on the defensive end. She is guarding much taller players and holding them to minimal field goals as well as creating chaos on the top of our press.”
Community had a slight 12-11 lead after the first quarter and then owned a 30-22 halftime advantage and 39-28 after the third quarter.
Community played at Madison on Tuesday for its Central Activities Conference opener before hosting conference foe Slater (0-3) on Friday.
