Bulldogs fall to Thunderbirds in rematch

Friday, the Mexico Bulldogs squared off against the North Callaway Thunderbirds at Southern Boone for the Fulton Tournament. The two teams had faced each other earlier in the season, with a game Thunderbirds team falling to the Bulldogs 11-4 in April. The second time around, the Thunderbirds would edge out the Bulldogs in a true pitchers’ duel, 2-1. With the win, the T-Birds gathered fifth place in the tourney.

Knotted at 1-1 after one inning, the Thunderbirds tacked on the last run of the game in the third inning for the win.

Eight hits were scattered over the game between the two teams, with the Bulldogs outhitting the T-Birds 5-3.

Sam Ryan, Andrew Runge, Gabe Kleinsorge, Austin Maxwell, and Tyler Thoenen had hits for the Bulldogs. Braydn O’Neal, Jordan Fishburn and Keaton Bell had hits for North Callaway.

O’Neal was 1-for-1 with a walk and had two steals. Entering Monday’s game, he has 22 steals on the season (22-for-23 in attempts). He scored both runs, with Fishburn and Kyle Pennell contributing an RBI each.

Landyn Kleinsorge delivered an impressive complete game but took the loss. Kleinsorge allowed three hits and walked only two in a complete game.

Davis Woods was equally masterful, going the distance while allowing one earned run, five hits, a walk and four strikeouts.

Mexico put the ball in play, with the Thunderbirds only recording four assists in the game. But as they did, the Thunderbirds defense held true. Neither team committed an error.

“It was an excellent pitching game,” said Thunderbirds assistant coach Zach Lavy. The Bulldogs are now 13-8 They faced Moberly Monday at home.

North Callaway improved to 9-10 with the win. They were at Clopton Monday night. They host Mark Twain Thursday for Senior Night.
