The Mexico girls volleyball team is beginning the climb back to the .500 mark. The Bulldogs capped a winning week with a three-set sweep of Bowling Green last week to improve to 4-6 overall. The victory was the squad’s third in a row, after beating Kirksville and Fulton earlier in the week. Senior Addison McCoy had 14 kills and 10 digs to help Mexico to the win (25-16, 25-15, 25-15). Mya Miller had a team-high 15 kills, while Nayelia Ruiz had a team-best 16 digits. Ally Wilson had 26 assists and Lizzie Joiner added 15. Two nights earlier, the Bulldogs pulled off a thrilling five-set win over Kirksville (18-25, 25-20, 25-11, 23-25, 15-11). Ruiz had a team-high 23 digits, followed by Joiner with 14, Jessica Stephens with 13 and Wilson with 11. Wilson and Joiner had 26 and 16 assists, respectively. McCoy recorded 20 kills, followed by Stephens with 11. Mexico began the week with a three-set win over Fulton (25-15, 25-15, 25-10). McCoy and Miller had eight and seven kills, respectively to lead the team. Wilson contributed 15 assists. Softball Bulldogs also on winning streak The Mexico softball team also is on a three-game winning streak and capped off an undefeated week by holding off Father Tolton 8-6 in last Thursday’s contest. Abby Bellamy had another bomb and recorded three RBIs in the win as the Bulldogs jumped ahead 2-0 in the first and tacked on three more runs in the third and fifth innings. Taylor DeMint had a crucial two RBI late in the game. Father Tolton scored all six of their runs in the sixth inning. The offense backed the pitching of Jordyn Thurman, who allowed four earned runs and struck out four. Eboni Mayfield earned the save. Boys soccer sits at 4-5-1 The Mexico boys soccer team is faring better than where it stood a year ago. The Bulldogs entered this week with a 4-5-1 record. They fell 6-1 to Columbia Rock Bridge last Thursday and won a hard-fought 4-3 contest on the road at Hannibal last Tuesday. Junior Haden Frazier had the lone goal in the Rock Bridge game. Fernando Guzman had the assist. In the Hannibal game, Frazier recorded a hat trick with three goals while senior Jordan Mitchell had the other goal. Junior Dominic McKeown had multiple assists in the win.
