It may have been Mexico’s first softball game in almost a year, but it didn’t appear that way.
The Lady Bulldogs scored four runs in the first inning and 12 runs in the first four innings Tuesday in a 13-6 summer scrimmage victory at home against South Callaway. Abby Bellamy picked up where she left off after her all-state junior season by going 2-for-2 with three RBI, a home run and a triple.
Bellamy broke several school records a season ago, including the 10 home runs she hit along with 15 doubles, a 1.085 slugging percentage and 89 total bases. She hit a home run to kick off Mexico’s scoring in the first inning after the Lady Bulldogs fell behind 1-0 after a half inning. She had to sprint for this round-tripper as it was an inside-the-park home run that also scored Brooke Teel for a 2-1 lead.
Mexico escaped the inning with a 4-1 lead for pitcher Emma Cunningham, who walked in a run and allowed an RBI single to Abbi Patrick, who was 3-for-4 with two RBI, for a 4-3 game. Cunningham didn’t allow another, though, as she allowed four hits and two walks while striking out seven in 4 1/3 innings.
South Callaway pitcher McKenzie Laughlin pitched all seven innings but walked eight batters, including two with the bases loaded in the second inning for a 6-3 Mexico lead. Two more Lady Bulldogs strolled home in the third inning that saw Mexico take a 9-3 advantage.
In the fourth inning, Bellamy and Lexie Willer laced back-to-back RBI triples into the gaps in a three-run frame.
Willer finished 1-for-2 with two runs and one RBI, Karlee Sefrit went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Hannah Loyd was 1-for-2 with two RBI. Shelby Shramek covered the final 3 2/3 innings for the Lady Bulldogs in the circle, allowing three hits and one earned run while striking out six.
Mexico has one more scrimmage scheduled with Hallsville at 6 p.m. July 12.
