Mexico's Gardner sprinting towards college football at Quincy University

After a slow year for Mexico’s Tre’Von Gardner, things are about to speed up.

The senior made it known Monday at the Mexico Sports Complex he will be playing college football for Quincy University’s sprint team.

Gardner will be majoring in sports management following a season he spent out with an ACL injury. He said the recovery is still ongoing but is feeling much better — to the point Quincy recruited him. The defensive back said he put in the work during the summer, honing his craft, which led to a torn ACL before the season but having several notice him.

“The coaches were just welcoming,” Gardner said. “They welcomed me with open arms on my visits and were good people to me. It was definitely rough, but they looked past that. I’m just glad that they picked me up.”

Sprint football has the same rules as normal football, but the only difference is the weight limit. Players must weigh in at 178 pounds or less, including the linemen. This brand of football has been in existence since before World War II, according to the Collegiate Sprint Football League website.

Quincy’s sprint program finished its first season with a record of 4-3 while competing in the six-team Midwest Spring Football League, which includes Missouri college Fontbonne University.

Gardner said he needs to be well-conditioned for the faster-paced style but also wants to improve in the classroom. He credits Mark Holman, the principal of the Mexico Education Center, with helping him through the recruiting process.

“It’s been a long road,” Gardner said. “The recruiting process was stressful. This guy (pointing to Holman) really helped me out a ton with the recruiting process and gave me a lot of good information.”
