Head tennis coach Kim Costley defined her team's performance at the NCMC conference tournament in Marshall on Wednesday with a fitting catch-all: "Great."
But with seven players earning All-Conference honors, capturing both an individual and doubles title, as well as second place on the team leaderboard, great may be a bit of an understatement.
Jocelyn Garcia picked up the conference crown in the number five singles bracket thanks to a 10-7 win over Marshall's Alizah Russell. In doubles play, the team of Claire Hudson and Lani Blair crushed Marshall and edged a Hannibal pair to claim first in the number three slot.
All three join teammates Shelby Kennemore, Katie Gooch, Lily Yager and Estrella Lopez on the All-Conference team.
Gooch went 1-1 with a 10-5 win over Kirksville's Marin Elmore, finishing second in number two singles. Yager and Lopez also came in second -- Yager with two 10-0 shutouts and a 2-1 mark in number three, Lopez wrapping up the tourney at 1-1 in number four singles.
Winona Whelan had a 2-1 outing in the number six position, giving her a bronze. In the top slot, Kennemore faced two difficult matches but emerged in fourth overall.
Mexico's one and two doubles teams both went 2-1 on the day. Brynna Carey and Jyllian Whitworth kept close in their only loss and claimed third. The number two pairing of Amelia Denham and Daida Herrera almost swept their bracket, their only loss being a 10-7 thriller.
They also finished third.
"We have several girls that are playing their best tennis of the year, and this is the time we want to be at our peak," Costley said.
In team standings, the Bulldogs racked up 42 points. Mexico filed in second behind Hannibal. Kirksville placed third with Marshall, Moberly and Fulton filling out the order.
