Missouri Military Academy lost all three games last week but still saw some positives.
The Colonels lost 87-42 to Belle, 56-33 to Chamois and 64-50 to Laquey in Belle tournament games on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Nathan Dempsey earned all-tournament honors after averaging 16.7 points in three games.
Head coach Roger Siwak said, even after two losses in the previous two days, MMA (1-10) played its best half all season by outsourcing Laquey (6-11) 32-19 after it was down 45-18 at halftime. It was a nice way to wrap up the week after having to deal with a hot shooting opponent in the first half.
“It was gratifying to see the effort and improvement,” Siwak said.
Dempsey scored 25 points in the Laquey loss, and Josh McCart followed with nine points.
MMA played the eventual champion Belle (12-4) to start off the tournament, falling behind 55-18 at halftime after some hot shooting by Belle. Dempsey finished with 20 points, Gihana Favour Nziza followed with eight points and Ky-Mani Erskine had seven points.
The Colonels were only down 21-17 at halftime to Chamois (6-9) before losing some ground. McCart led MMA with 10 points, and Erskine had a season-best day with eight points.
MMA attempts to snap a 10-game losing streak this week. The Colonels hosted Sunnydale Adventist Academy on Tuesday before hosting Chamois in a rematch at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
