The Community R-6 girls didn't forget.
The Lady Trojans lost their first Central Activities Conference game earlier this season to Sturgeon after a double-overtime thriller at home but were victorious on Tuesday at Sturgeon 48-35.
Head coach Bob Curtis said the rematch was a game Community "marked back on our calendars in December" after the tough loss at that time. The Lady Trojans (15-8, 6-2 CAC) had a great defensive start by allowing six points in the first quarter but then had to adjust after the Lady Bulldogs (7-14, 4-3 CAC) scored 21 points in the second quarter, making Community trail 27-17 at halftime.
"In the second, they got hot, hitting four three's against our zone, forcing us to mix and match defensively adjusting to man running them off the 3-point line," Curtis said. "It worked and forced some turnovers that led to us outscoring them by 17 in the second half. "
Brooklynn Glasgow led Community with 13 points and three steals, Kylie Brooks followed with 10 points and 11 rebounds, Aaliyah Welch had nine points and seven rebounds, Peyton Beamer finished with eight points and four assists, and Alyssa Beamer had eight points and two 3-pointers.
Curtis said the Lady Trojans are a different team than the one that lost to Sturgeon in the first half of the season. He said Glasgow has emerged more while Peyton Beamer has done well handling opponents' defensive pressure.
"Brooklynn Glasgow has really come on this second half of the season as her offensive numbers are up, she is helping run the point at times, and her leadership and basketball IQ is super high," Curtis said. "This team has become very hard to guard as just about every starter is close to averaging double digits in scoring night in and night out. "
Community has another conference game at 6 p.m. Friday at home against Glasgow (13-9, 6-1 CAC) for Senior Night.
The Trojans lost 46-35 at Sturgeon on Tuesday, making it their second loss this season to the Bulldogs (10-12, 3-4 CAC). Community (4-18, 2-6 CAC) nearly matched its offensive output from the first meeting but improved defensively from the 55 points allowed before. After the Lady Trojans' game, the Trojans face Glasgow (15-7, 5-2 CAC) at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
