The shots were falling for Community R-6 girls to keep up with state-ranked Higbee on Wednesday night and then they weren't.
The Lady Trojans' season ended in the Class 1 District 9 semifinals at Blair Oaks in Wardsville after a 60-44 loss to Class 1 No. 10 Higbee. Higbee outscored Community 18-10 in the third quarter despite the Lady Trojans only trailing 27-25 at halftime.
Head coach Bob Curtis said Community couldn't match the 11 3-pointers Higbee hit in the game,
"We just went cold from the perimeter against their 1-3-1 zone," Curtis said. "They had their best eight minutes while we were struggling and got a comfortable lead that we just could not overcome."
Seniors Alyssa Beamer and Brooklynn Goasgow each led with 15 points, and Peyton Beamer finished with six points. Senior Kylie Brooks had four points.
The Lady Trojans finish this season at 16-11 for their 12th straight winning season, and Curtis said they were so close to accomplishing even more this season. He pointed out the third-place finishes for the New Franklin and Sturgeon tournaments were on bucket away from at least being runn-up finishes, meaning Community almost knocked off Nos. 1 and 2 seeds.
"I am proud of what these girls have accomplished this season," Curtis said. "They were a fun group to be around, they got better as the season progressed and learned valuable skills as a part of this team that will help them after graduation."
