Community R-6’s offense was awake early Monday.

After losing Friday’s season opener at South Callaway 4-2 after tallying just three doubles, the Lady Trojans defeated Glasgow 12-5 in their Central Activities Conference and home opener. Community had 14 hits, including six doubles, that helped it take a 7-4 lead after two innings.

Senior leadoff hitter Sarah Angel finished 2-for-3 with four runs scored and one double, senior Ivy Hays led the team with three RBI and junior Brooklynn Glasgow, freshman Jocelyn Curtis and senior Olivia Kuda each had two RBI. Curtis and Glasgow both finished with two doubles.

Curtis and Hays came up with hits in the five-run first inning for Community before the Lady Trojans had to respond again in the second inning after a four-run top of the second for Glasgow. Kuda gave the Lady Trojans some cushion with an RBI single.

Curtis pitched six innings while allowing six hits and five unearned runs by way of four errors striking out five.

Against South Callaway, the Lady Trojans were limited to three hits compared to South Callaway’s 10. Angel, Curtis and junior Paige Painter all picked up two bags. Painter’s and Curtis’ both happened in the seventh inning.

Painter was also in the circle for the Lady Trojans, going the full six innings while allowing four runs and three walks. South Callaway’s McKenzie Laughlin struck out 11 and allowed three hits in seven innings.

Angel led off the game for Community with her double and scored the first run on an error. The Lady Trojans lost the lead after allowing three runs in the first two innings and another in the fifth inning that scored Laughlin after smacking the team’s third double earlier in the frame.

Painter led off the seventh inning with a double and then came home on Curtis’ double. The final two Lady Trojans struck out to end the game.
Community plays at Hermann at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

The Community R-6 School District will enjoy a new scoreboard for the 2022-23 softball and baseball season.

“We are very excited to finally have this project completed,” R-6 athletic director Tad Shotten said. “I think this will help generate excitement around our school and athletics programs, we hope to continue to get support from our community so we can keep improving our facilities, we want our athletes to have the best we can offer”.

The school expressed appreciation to Kevin Ahrens at Ahrens Steel for the support beams, Consolidated Electric for digging the holes and helping set the beams, and Craig Fennewald for letting them borrow his crane.

“Another big special thanks goes out to Chris Jung, our maintenance supervisor,” said Shotten, “for all the work he did helping get this project completed as well as Tyler Kobush! Also Fred Rheinwald for his contribution to the project.”

Appreciation was also given to the Community R-6 Athletic Booster Club, who provided the dollars to make the project possible.

“The Community R-6 School District wants to thank everyone for their generosity and support to continue to better our athletic programs,” Shotten said.
