Temperatures that reached double digits in the negative shut down much of the state this weekend including Mexico after a winter storm dumped snow on the area last week.
Cold temperatures forced the cancelation of several events including Monday’s Martin Luther King Jr. holiday march and celebration at the Audrain County Courthouse.
Although Mexico’s YMCA was open and a place of refuge for folks looking for some activity, the pool was shut down on Sunday, Jan. 14, because of a malfunction of mechanical instruments that had frozen according to a post on Facebook.
The First Presbyterian Church provided a warming station on Saturday, Jan. 13, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. which coincided with the opening of Mexico’s cold shelter at the Audrain County Shelter Resource Center that is open overnight. That shelter is part of Columbia’s Room at the Inn program.
According to data from the University of Missouri the coldest day ever recorded in the state of Missouri was on Feb. 13, 1905 when temperatures dipped to -25 degrees. In the winter of 1935-36 the state had the most occurrences with temperatures below zero at 19 days. The hottest day on record in the state was in July of 1954 at over 113 degrees.
