Doris Ruth Alton, 94, of Mexico, passed away at 9:16 a.m. Thursday, October 19, 2023, at Kings Daughter’s Home in Mexico.

Funeral services will be held at a later date. Pickering Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. Doris was born May 10, 1929, in Mexico. She was the daughter of Dorsey and Anna Pearl (Guffey) Dilts. On August 19, 1950, in Mexico, she married William “Billy” Alton. He preceded her in death on March 6, 2017. 

Doris worked at Montgomery Ward and then for 25 years at the JC Penney store, the last 4 as the manager. She was a follower of Christ and spent many years attending First Baptist Church of Mexico, and most recently,  attended Victory Christian Fellowship in Mexico.

Doris was very involved in her boy’s lives by being a Den Mother for many years in Cub Scouts. She supported her sons in their adventures and careers, even going on a float trip when she had a great fear of the water. There were many summer trips to the Lake of the Ozarks staying in a cabin, boating, skiing and fishing.

In their retirement years, they bought a farm for Golden Boy, their horse, and raised Angus cattle. They would be seen all over the county attending Senior Dances and dancing the two-step. When grandchildren came along, her and Bill attended as many school sports, 4-H and fair activities as they could. There were many sleepovers, campouts, and hanging out at the farm, feeding the catfish, hummingbirds, and swinging on the porch swing.

Survivors include two sons, William E. “Bill” Alton II, of Columbia, and Steve A. Alton (Denise) of Mexico; one sister, Gloria Evans, of Mexico; eight grandchildren, Ryan Alton and wife Amy, of Jacksonville,, Lindsay Groteweil, Columbia, Nathan Alton, Columbia, Ashlie Oestreich and husband Gavin, of Blair, Neb.,, Arica Walker and husband Cody, Mexico, Aimee Pashia and husband Caleb, Mexico, Andrew Alton and wife Sarah, Mexico, and Ariana Stankovic and husband Milos, West Lafayette, Ind.; and 18 great grandchildren.

In addition to her husband Bill, she was preceded in death by one brother, Larry Dilts; and one sister, Beatrice Goff. Memorial contributions may be made to King's Daughters Home. They may be sent in care of Pickering Funeral Home, 403 N. Western, Mexico, Mo. 65265.
