Election 2023: Marijuana tax wins approval throughout county

Posted

Everyone who came to the polls Tuesday was asked to vote on whether a marijuana sales tax should be placed on recreational marijuana sold at the county and city level.

Voters unanimously voted to support the additional 3% sales tax at the countywide level, according to unofficial results from Tuesday’s election. Voters in Mexico, Laddonia, Farber, Martinsburg, Vandalia and Benton City also approved separate – and similar – measures

The separate sales taxes will be in addition to the normal sales taxes and a separate 6% marijuana tax already being charged by the state government.

Countywide, 2,115 voters supported the 3% sales tax compared to 578 voters who were opposed.
The vote totals in the following cities were: Mexico (1,014-315), Laddonia (48-26), Farber (22-11), Martinsburg (25-5), Vandalia (106-35) and Benton City (13-10).

Overall, Tuesday’s election saw 2,741 out of 14,814 registered voters (18.5%) visit the polls.

Voters also supported a tax increase to support the Audrain County Ambulance District. The tax levy will be increased by 15 cents per $100 of assessed value to help with staffing and replacing aging equipment. The measure, labeled as “Proposition Ambulance Services,” had 1,550 voters for and 686 against. Community R-6 voters approved a $1.1 million no-tax increase bond issue with 234 in support and 40 against. The initiative, known as Proposition K.I.D.S., will provide funds to update the district’s facilities.

Two new faces will be joining the Mexico School Board. Incumbent Todd D. Yager was the top vote-getter and was re-elected with 1,486 votes. Joining him on the board are newcomers Mathew Pilger and Jessica Johnson Ekern with 793 and 782 votes, respectively. Other candidates were Dusty Blue (775), Michelle Stephens (650), Kelli S. Teel (636), Jennifer Gore (184) and Kara Clovis (95).

In a five-person race for the Mexico City Council, Steve Haag and Larry Webber were winners with 875 and 816 votes, respectively. Other candidates were Erik Richardson (354), John C. Loveless (187) and Joshua Price (136).

The Vandalia Ward 2 alderman race was won by Larry Holt with 15 votes. Stanley Hazel followed with five votes.

In a three-person race for the Vandalia Ward 3 seat, Christy Lowrance won with 37 votes. Dustin Holt was second with 30 and Larry Wheeler with 13.

Gerald L. Davis Sr. and Jeremy Fendrick won a seat on the Laddonia Board of Aldermen. Davis had 56 points and Fendrick had 39. Rodney Garnett finished third with 31 votes.
