The Elks Lodge 2022 scholarship application is slowly approaching as the deadline for Most Valuable student consideration is November 14.

The top scores for male and female applicants are awarded $1,500 and the runner-up receives $500 by Mexico Elks Lodge 919.

“The applications are competitive with all the senior applicants in the state through an Elks Lodge,” lodge member Ron Whitaker, Local and District Elks Most Valuable Student scholarship program chairman for the past 17 years, said. “The scoring categories are, ACT score, class rank, grade point, rigorous curriculum, extra-curriculum activities, honors and financial. Each Elks Lodge in the state gives different amount to the top applications.”

Students from Mexico, Centralia, Paris, Van-Far, Community R-6, Wellsville-Middletown and North Callaway are all up for consideration for the scholarship bestowed by the Mexico lodge.

“Unlike most scholarship awards, the Elks scholarship is an ascending, stair step type,” Whitaker said. “The top three applicants qualify for the district competition and the top six from the district qualify for the state competition. The top 20 applicants from the state grading then qualify for the National competition.

“Each advancement provides more money. The local, district, state applications are graded by different committees.”

The Mexico Elks have been giving out scholarships to local students for approximately four decades via different versions and qualifications, according to Whitaker.

“This started before the personal computers and used a pencil and a box,” Whitaker said. “Some members find the current on-line scoring challenging.”
Whitaker said he believes the total Elks scholarships given out over the years – not including local monies – is approximately $3 million.

“(It’s about) the look of satisfaction on the winning applicants, their persistence and efforts have paid off when we have the banquet for the winners and their parents,” Whitaker said.

An online application is available at enf.elks.org/mvs and questions can be addressed at 573-473-5252.
