Goat Show: Brother act leads the way

The Van Schyndel brothers had their way in the goat show at this year’s Audrain County Youth Fair.

Nick Van Schyndel, who also won the king’s crown, captured the title for champion dairy doe while his brother, Kodi, got his own piece of the pie Friday at the fairgrounds.

In addition, Adam Rhoades won for market goats supreme  doe and Macey Rhodes took home a first place in market goats reserve.

The younger Schyndel, 11, won the 4–5-year-old doe and has worked with Fern for three years and has “actually milked,” the winning goat.

“What I usually do is feed her in the morning and water her,” Kodi said. “Then we go and walk around, but she doesn’t like to walk around too much, so we will take a break.

“She was pretty easy to work with and I’ve shown her for three years. She was easy to work with, but she is old and gets hot really easily, so she doesn’t like to walk.”

Kodi said he does this because he likes to work with animals.

“Fern just knows me and knows when I want to talk to her,” Kodi said. “I want to be a professional milker when I grow up so I can have dairy cows, goats and sheep.”
