HVAC, water main issues cause Mexico schools to close

Posted

The winter weather the area has experienced over the past week has shut down local schools and is pushing back activities on the calendar.

Mexico Public Schools were shut down on Wednesday because of HVAC issues at Eugene Field Elementary School. According to a social media post there were some water main issues at at least one school.

Superintendent Melissa Chastain brought the problem up at the Board of Education meeting on Tuesday night during a discussion about the upcoming bond issue. Chastain said district patrons are getting a real time look into why the district is asking for the bond.

“The bond would alleviate that,” Chastain said about forcing the school to close down because of HVAC issues.

A district spokesperson said a part broke with the HVAC system at Eugene Field and it would not be fixed until Thursday. Teachers found alternate locations for students on Thursday according to the district.

The weather has also affected the calendar. Mexico High School is moving it’s Winterwarming basketball games along with all of the week’s festivities to next month. The Winterwarming game scheduled versus Moberly will now be played Friday, Feb. 16 with the crowning of Mr. Bulldog to follow. The high school dance will be held on Saturday, Feb. 17.

“Student council, high school administration, and staff would like for students to have the opportunity to participate fully in the activities, and, unfortunately, the winter weather has limited activities for this week,” a district news release said.

Other student activities, such as PowderBuff Volleyball and the assembly, will also be moved to February. More information to follow soon.

So far Mexico has missed six school days because of weather but the district has built in enough minutes into the calendar to avoid any extra days. The district has no plans to implement distance learning if weather issues continue.

Mexico Public Schools is not the only district to be affected. Community R-VI students returned to classes on Wednesday after being off for several days. It was noted at the Board of Education meeting on Wednesday night there had been only six school days since the December BOE meeting.
