Both Community R-6 teams winning streaks against Central Activities Conference foe Sturgeon were snapped in different but tough ways on Tuesday night. The Lady Trojans lost 54-52 in double overtime after defeating Sturgeon 11 straight times and then the Trojans dropped their game against the Bulldogs 55-36 after the gap widened late to lose to them after three consecutive victories in the rivalry.
Leading the way for the Lady Trojans (4-4, 2-1 CAC) was Kylie Brooks as she had yet another monster game against Sturgeon (two double-doubles a season ago against the Lady Bulldogs) with 22 points, 20 rebounds, five blocks, three steals and a 10-for-14 night at the free-throw line. Brooks sent tied the game at 46 with two free throws to send it to double overtime, and before that, Brooklynn Glasgow nailed a 3-pointer to tie the game at 42 to warrant an overtime period. Glasgow finished with seven points and five rebounds, and Peyton Beamer had eight points and three steals. Allie Heath led Sturgeon (4-3, 2-0 CAC) with 16 points and was 5-for-6 from the line, and Brooklyn Dougherty had 15 points and three 3-pointers.
The Trojans (2-6, 1-2 CAC) were down 25-15 in the first half but cut the deficit to 26-22 thanks to four 3-pointers hit in the second quarter -- two each from Mason Rohan and Brett Beamer. Paden Pollock responded with a 3-pointer to make it 29-22 Sturgeon at halftime, and then the Bulldogs (3-4, 2-0 CAC) picked up transition points off turnovers in the second half to outscore Community 26-14 in the latter two quarters. Mason Carroll had a double-double for the Trojans at 11 points and 11 rebounds, and Beamer, Rohan and Clayton Jennings each followed with six points. Isaac Bolles led Sturgeon with 17 points, Connor Lawson followed with 11 points and Ethan Benskin had 10 points.
The Community boys and girls each play in the Gary Filbert Classic in Mexico on Saturday with the Trojans facing Calvary Lutheran at 1:15 p.m. and Lady Trojans taking on Harrisburg at 2:45 p.m.
