Despite the shots not falling in the first quarter, the North Callaway girls hit plenty by the end of Thursday's game at Sturgeon. In their first game coming off Christmas break, the Ladybirds won 51-30 after only leading 6-5 after the first quarter but then outscoring Sturgeon 19-6 in the second quarter.

North Callaway (7-4) hit five of its 11 3-pointers in the second quarter, and Natalie Shryock finished with 21 points and a career-high seven 3-pointers (made that much in game last season against Clopton). Lakyn Hartley followed with six points, eight rebounds and four assists, Riley Blevins had six points, four rebounds and four assists, and Faith Cash had five points and five rebounds (four offensive). Rylee West led Sturgeon (5-5) with 14 points and four 3-pointers, including 11 points in the fourth quarter.

“I was nervous we weren’t going to shoot very well,” head coach Andrew Klein said. “Our floor got redone so we’ve only had one practice over the last week, and we practiced at Fulton High School. Getting back in the flow of a varsity level speed of a game is tough sometimes and getting up and down the floor.”

The Ladybirds outrebounded Sturgeon 35-22 and had 14 assists.

North Callaway plays at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at district foe South Callaway (3-7).
