Mexico rakes in season-highs in 16-8 win at Marshall

Mexico hadn’t had an offensive explosion this season like Tuesday night.

The Bulldogs scored a season-high 16 runs on a season-high 19 hits, including five extra base hits, to win at North Central Missouri Conference foe Marshall 16-8. Three Bulldogs tallied three hits and three finished with two hits.

Andrew Runge went 3-for-5 with three RBI and a triple, Drew DeMint went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a double, Landon Hilderman was 2-for-4 with two RBI, Landyn Kleinsorge went 2-for-4 with two RBI, Tyson Carr was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a double, and Tyler Thoenen finished 3-for-3 with a double.

The Bulldogs (6-7, 3-3 NCMC) built an early sizable lead of 7-5 over Marshall (0-10, 0-4 NCMC) after two innings for starting pitcher Austin Maxwell, whose five runs were all unearned as he walked four and allowed two hits in two innings. Mexico found the holes in the middle innings for its runs until it stretched it to 16-8 in the seventh on RBIs by Kleinsorge, Carr and DeMint.

Brady Fox covered the final five innings while allowing three hits and three runs.

Mexico hosts district foe Centralia (3-5) at 5 p.m. Thursday.

Van-Far can’t push past five in 14-3 loss at Elsberry

Van-Far tried to make it past the fifth inning at Elsberry on Tuesday.

The Indians didn’t make it as Eastern Missouri Conference leader Elsberry scored four runs in the fourth inning to defeat Van-Far 14-3 in five innings. Elsberry (10-4, 7-0 EMO) only needed six hits as the Indians (0-7, 0-3 EMO) committed eight errors that gave way to nine unearned runs.

Right from the beginning, Elsberry had a 7-0 lead after the first inning, which contained three Van-Far errors along with four walks and a hit by pitch by starting pitcher Cody Smith.

Dalana Gay scored a run as Gage Gibson stole a base in the second, making Elsberry pay for walking both of them. After the lead increased to 10-1, Van-Far strung together three straight singles — the Indians’ only hits of the game — to start the third inning to set up a two-RBI single by Reece Culwell.

Early mistakes in the fourth inning that mirrored ones earlier in the game led to Van-Far allowing four runs to lose soon after.

Van-Far hosts a winless battle with conference foe Mark Twain (0-8, 0-4 EMO) at 5 p.m. Thursday while Elsberry plays at North Callaway (5-3, 4-0 EMO) at the same time for a conference undefeated showdown.

Monroe City 8 Missouri Military Academy 6 in Mexico. Colonels are 3-4 and play at Louisiana (1-8) 5 p.m. Friday.

Macon 8 Centralia 3 in Centralia. Panthers are 3-5 and play at Mexico at 5 p.m. Thursday.
