Mexico boys put four on all-conference team

The Mexico boys were among the Class 4 elite eight for the third time in four years.

The 27-3 Bulldogs, who were state-ranked all season long, were led by an elite four that made the all-North Central Missouri Conference team. DJ Long and Jaydon Eldridge each made the first team, and PJ Perkins and Kaden Benne each were on the second team for a Mexico squad that went an undefeated 10-0 in conference for the NCMC championship.

Long surpassed 1,500 career points in his final season as the Mexico point guard, finishing with averages around 18 points, four rebounds, six assists and three steals. Eldridge followed him in scoring at around 14 points along with five rebounds and 45 made 3-pointers.

Perkins averaged around 12 points while cleaning up the boards at around nine rebounds per game, and Benne averaged around eight points and a 30 percent mark from 3-point territory.

The Mexico girls increased their win total and advanced further this season.

The Lady Bulldogs had the contributions from two all-North Central Missouri Conference players to earn them a 12-16 record and their first district championship game berth since 2021. Claire Hudson made the first team while Jo Thurman was a second-team selection.

Hudson was Mexico’s leading scorer at 14.6 points per game and averaged 6.8 rebounds, two steals, a 74 percent clip on free throws and 33 percent mark from the floor.

Thurman averaged 7.2 points while having 4 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 3.2 steals and a 36 percent mark from the floor.
