The temperature outside might have been below zero at some points, but the Mexico, Centralia and North Callaway girls wrestlers were warm inside. The third annual Mexico Brick City Classic was hosted Monday, or Martin Luther King Day, on Gary Filbert Court in the Mexico Sports Complex for the Lady Bulldogs' lone home date on their schedule.

Mexico had four medalists that each finished second in their respective weight classes including Alizabeth Welch at 100A, Abby Bowen at 135A, Alexus Johns at 235A and Matty Tolbert at 235B. Karisa Hayden and Jashayla Johnson each were fourth in their classes after going 2-3.

Centralia had three earn medals, including Class 1 No. 1 wrestler Jayci Shelton after she pinned both of her opponents to take first place at 155A, Madie Shelton went 4-1 to finish second at 130A and Abigail Barte was second at 135B&C.

North Callaway had two girls compete on Saturday. Brooke Giboney placed fifth at 105A after going 2-2 with her first two matches being losses against returning state qualifiers. Abigail Schmidt was seventh at 170B&C after going 2-3.

Since Mexico was on its home mats, the Lady Bulldogs took time in the middle of the tournament to recognize its three seniors Katie Bowen, Hayden and Abbie Seibert. Bowen was part of the original Mexico girls wrestling team three years ago that consisted of her, Mexico youth wrestling coach Kaylynn Pehle, Mexico Middle School wrestling coach Brett Iman, Choice Foster, Abby Drew and Ivy Perez, who were all at the meet.
