The Mexico girls were able to turn in their best performance of the year on Thursday.
The Lady Bulldogs snapped a 10-game losing streak, which included a nine-game skid in North Central Missouri Conference games, after defeating conference rival Fulton 4-1 on the road to secure first-year head coach Sarah Olson’s first win. Mexico’s previous NCMC victory also happened against Fulton (0-9, 0-5 NCMC) on April 14 last season.
“Each game, we try to set small goals for ourselves and focus on improving those things, and last night was no different,” head coach Sarah Olson said. “We wanted to score in the first 15 minutes, and we also wanted to win 50/50 balls. We met both of those goals.”
Claire Hudson went into Thursday with two goals on the season and came out of the evening with double the amount, scoring a couple more. Jamilet Medina and Emily Moppin each added a goal for a season-high output for Mexico (1-9, 1-4 NCMC) to also give the Lady Bulldogs their first win against a district opponent. Moppin’s goal was her third in two games.
“We didn't necessarily score back to back, but had a lot of shots throughout the game and our goals were pretty spaced out,” Olson said. “As far as my first win as a head coach, yes it is very exciting. The girls put in so much effort so it is nice to see their hard work pay off, and we are hungry to get another win soon.”
Mexico began the Lady Spartan Invitational in Moberly on Friday and continues play today before playing at conference foe Marshall (7-2, 4-1 NCMC) at 5 p.m. Monday.
