Mexico girls honor coaching legend Costley, lose 52-48 to Capital City

Friday night was a memorable gathering for the Mexico girls program.

The Lady Bulldogs fell short 52-48 to Class 5 Capital City but had a ceremony to honor former coach Ed Costley’s 20 years of contributions to the program. Mexico held a ceremony between the junior varsity and varsity games, presenting the 456-win coach with a commemorative basketball, and then held a reception in the Mexico Sports Complex where he visited with his former players.

Head coach Makenzie Mudd coached for several years under Costley — who led Mexico to seven North Central Missouri Conference titles — and played for him as a Lady Bulldog as well. She said 2009 graduate Katherine Wortmann planned the speech delivered to the crowd during the ceremony.

“It was great to have so many former players there with the current players to share memories and celebrate Coach Costley’s legacy,” Mudd said. “It was a very special occasion for me as a former player, assistant coach, and now head coach who took over his program.”

As for the game, Mudd said Capital City (5-12) showed much toughness and physicality but was proud her team kept it a back-and-forth game until a few mistakes were costly to Mexico (10-11) in the fourth quarter. Claire Hudson led with 17 points and eight rebounds, Grace Hudson followed with 13 points and Jo Thurman had 11 points, five assists and five steals.

Mexico boys scrap way to 78-64 win at Osage

The Mexico boys’ season-high winning streak has reached 10 games.

The Bulldogs had a bit of a fight on Friday to make it happen but won 78-64 at School of the Osage. To counter Osage’s nine 3-pointers and 24 points in the fourth quarter, Class 4 No. 8 Mexico (21-2) finished at 50 percent from the field and with 48 points in the paint.

“Overall, it was a scrappy game, but our guys found a way to put together some runs where we were really solid on both ends of the floor.”

Mexico took a 27-12 lead after the first quarter and then widened its lead over Osage (7-13) to 65-40 going into the fourth quarter. DJ Long led the Bulldogs with 20 points and 10 assists, Jaydon Eldridge had 19 points and PJ Perkins finished with 18 points.
