Mexico wins pair, readies for conference

Mexico made quick work of North Pointe on Tuesday at the Fairgrounds Park Netplex, winning all nine matches.

The outcome was not surprising. North Pointe is a brand new tennis program from a school that opened just a month ago in Wentzville.

Winona Whelan faced the strongest opposition. It took 13 sets to settle the matter at 8-5.

North Pointe could manage only two other set wins. In singles, Katie Gooch cruised past the Grizzlies' Samantha Horn 8-1. In doubles play, Whelan and Lily Yager teamed for an 8-1 win.

Shelby Kennemore and Gooch swept their doubles match, as did Estrella Lopez and Jocelyn Garcia.

The remaining singles matches, played by Kennemore, Yager, Garcia and Lopez, all resulted in shutouts.

Mexico stings Hornets

On Monday in Fulton the Bulldogs secured a 4-1 conference mark with an 8-1 team victory.

Mexico began the evening with a 3-0 advantage after the doubles teams each eased to 10-1 wins. The one and two singles matches ended in the same fashion, with Shelby Kennemore and Katie Gooch both on top 10-1.

Lily Yager outpaced Fulton's Maelynn Kramer 10-3. Estrella Lopez and Jocelyn Garcia both held comfortable 10-2 leads at the end.

The contest was almost a Bulldogs whitewash. Winona Whelan and Kier Henderson traded blows in an intense and equally matched battle before the Hornets' number six pried open a lead to take it 10-8.
