The Mexico Wolfpack Academy came to play the final game of the six-game YMCA Futsal League with a 2-2-1 record.
The season was .500 balanced but facing the Helias Crusaders would be the final team to decide if you stay above or below .500. The final score would be the Wolfpack falling to Helias 9-3.
The Crusaders came with a physical attack of pressure defense not allowing the Wolfpack time to set up and move down the floor. The game was chippy and very aggressive. At the half, Crusaders lead 2-8.
“At half, the team looked unsure of themselves, but I kept it real with them by saying, ‘We are just getting hit in the mouth and we aren’t responding like we should, we need to respond quickly rather than slowly,’” Coach Chris Williamson said. “‘Get off the ball faster and recognize the gaps they’re attacking on kickoff and proceed with a counter attack. Either you're gonna play to win the second half or retreat like in the past?’”
The second half was pressure both ways. The Mexico Wolfpack seemed to be on a hunt with a quick score by Jose Pena (California) that added to the first and second goal scored by Alex Rodriguez/Jesus Garcia (both Mexico) before halftime. The Crusaders would only send one goal in the back of the net in the second half.
“Great job on defense efficiency in the second half, we just started out slow and off balance,” Williamson said. “Overall, this is a good step forward for what I think we will see for the regular fall high school season. These players will have a better understanding of position, fundamentals and overall soccer strategy.
“It's long overdue. These players have come to California and Battle High school to practice. I would like to say thank you to those athletic directors, but it’s also nice for these players to practice at home as well.
“Great job and season for these first time futsal players. We now will move on to small side field play and some 11 v11 competitive MMSL in Boonville Mo. Hopefully we can do 11 v11 scrimmages for the community on the Mexico Bulldog Field for all the hard work these players are putting down.”
