Mexico Public Safety Department has sent out an updated press release in reference to a fire at an apartment building in the 1200 block of West Breckenridge Drive on Friday, Dec. 23.
According to the press release sent out on Saturday, Dec. 24, responding personnel found heavy flame already burning through the roof of part of the building. Personnel attempted to make sure everyone was out of the building which consisted of 11 apartments and an office. The fire was eventually extinguished with nine of the apartments and the office being destroyed. The other two apartments were undamaged. One resident of the apartments on West Breckenridge, 60-year-old, Ruth Ann Stuart, died in the fire. Three Mexico Public Safety Department personnel suffered minor weather-related injuries. The Missouri State Fire Marshal's Office responded to help with the investigation into the cause of the fire. Audrain Ambulance District also responded to the fire on West Breckenridge to assist in the care of the residents and firefighters during the extremely cold conditions.
About an hour later at 2:33 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 23, Mexico Public Safety responded to a fire alarm in the 1000 block of Elmwood Drive. Responding personnel eventually discovered a small fire in the Spartan Light Metals building. A mutual aid request was made of Little Dixie Fire Protection District. LDFBD personnel responded to help on West. Breckenridge and handled firefighting operations on Elmwood Drive. The Missouri State Fire Marshal's Office is assisting with this investigation as well. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
