Silex tallied 11 hits but took advantage of eight walks by MMA pitching and six Colonel errors to score eight unearned runs in a 19-4 five-inning loss for MMA. Five Colonels stepped on the mound, including three for the first time in varsity action this season.

Head coach Thomas Roberts said MMA (2-3) this season has two seniors. This presents much inexperienced play from the Colonels that includes errors and walks piling up. On top of that, Roberts said MMA’s full pitching staff wasn’t available following William Delaplane and Anthony Melick, who each came with varsity innings this year.

“We don’t have any consistency right now,” Roberts said. “We have a decent defense, but we’re committing too many errors. If we clean up errors, we’ll be fine.

“Delly played a pretty good first two or three innings with 60 pitches and kept us in the game. We’ve had a little bug go through us, and some kids have been sick.”

After Silex (3-3) scored two in the first inning, MMA answered with one in the bottom half on a RBI single from Hunter Manderson, who was thrown out trying to score on a deep double by Melick. Silex posted eight runs each in the third and fourth innings to run away with the game at that point.

Roberts said the lineup one through five was strong, especially Melick and Manderson. Melick finished with a double, triple and RBI while Manderson almost finished with two hits after a scorching liner ended up in an outfielder’s glove. Bryce Slayton and Luke Wolf also had RBIs for the Colonels.

“We didn’t get clutch hits,” Roberts said. “When you get people on base you do have to move them, and we didn’t move anybody.”

Other Colonels that impressed Roberts was freshman Michael Moss as he finished with a hit and pitched one solid innings on the mound, allowing one unearned run. Freshman left fielder Noah Garcia laid out and caught two balls during the game to show off the good defense Roberts was referring to.

Wolf and Slayton each are sophomores, and Avin Hernandez also picked up a hit while in his sophomore season.

“We’re mostly freshmen and sophomores,” Roberts said. “Hopefully, we get more consistent and cut the errors up.”

MMA hosts another school from the Eastern Missouri Conference at 5 p.m. today as the Colonels play Montgomery County (4-1).
