Missouri Military Academy used several key performances to swim away with it at home Tuesday.

The Colonels defeated Columbia schools Hickman, Rock Bridge and Battle by scoring 95 points — beating runner-up Hickman’s 61 — to win its home swimming and diving meet and broke six school records in the process. Anthony Melick, Paulo Pereira De Abreu Don and Tiago Ruas Deluca each won four events, and Carlos Villarreal won the one-meter dive competition followed by Johncarlos Ahuja. Ruas broke four records, Melick and Pereria each had three new records.

Doing the backstroke, Melick teamed with breaststroke swimmer Pereira and butterfly swimmer Ruas in MMA’s winning 200 medley and 200 freestyle relay teams. The medley team set a new record time of 2:00.42, and the record-breaking freestyle relay time of 1:50.89. Malachi Imrie was the fourth swimmer on those teams, swimming the freestyle in the medley relay.

In individual events, Melick won the 200 individual medley, with a record-breaking time of 2:29.15 and 100 freestyle. Pereira was victorious in the 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke, setting the new record time of 1:12.30. Ruas took first in the 200 and 400 freestyle races, breaking the 200 record with a time of 2:03.37 and the 400 record with a mark of 4:39.28.

MMA swimmers filled out the top 3 in the 200 individual medley, where William Viera and Brayden Phelps finished behind Melick, and the 400 freestyle, where Miles Matthews and Justyn Daigle were behind Ruas Deluca. The 400 freestyle relay team of Daigle, Villarreal, Ahuja and Erick Bond.

MMA competed at Hickman on Wednesday and will go to Hannibal on Thursday.

MMA defeats Canton 2-1 in overtime

Missouri Military Academy is finding a knack of winning overtime soccer games.

The Colonels won 2-1 in extra time at Canton on Tuesday two games after winning 3-2 in overtime against Kirksville at home. Gorka Yarte and Lucas Almeida scored MMA’s goals, just as they did in the team’s previous game against Fulton.

Yarte has a goal in two straight games, and Almeida has a goal in three consecutive, totaling five during that span.

“It was a tough game for us against a Canton side who made it very difficult for us,” head coach Eliot Goodwin said. “I’m happy we found the winning goal, but we have to be able to learn from difficult moments and overcome frustrations in the game. We have some good players in our squad, so if they can find consistency with their performances, then results will come our way.

Goodwin recalls winning a 4-3 game last season with today’s opponent Elsberry (1-4) so he expects another tough game for MMA (3-2) tonight at home.
