Moose Lodge comes through for schools

Knowing what teachers have to come up with year-after-year to make the best for their students, the Mexico Moose Lodge wanted to make sure 2022-23 was anything but rocky.

So, Patrick Shaw, the administrator for the Mexico Moose Lodge, and his fellow Moose, set up an area school-supply drive for the teachers at four schools – Mexico Middle, Eugene Field Elementary, Hawthorne Elementary and McMillan Learning Center.

It all came about during talks at the lodge about what it hoped to do next for the community.

“We had a discussion about different projects to do throughout the year and one of the committee members suggested we do a supply drive for the teachers,” Shaw said. “We went around to the elementary schools and middle schools and asked what kids lack the most gave us a list (pencils, crayons, wipes, Kleenex) and we set a budget at $500.”

All monies were raised from donations from various factions of the Moose Lodge.

“We got about 1,000 pencils, 300 earbuds, two cases of 60 boxes of Kleenex, 24 boxes of crayons and wipes,” Shaw said. “We divided them between the schools.”

Beck Balsalmo, assistant principal at Hawthorne, couldn’t have been happier with the gesture.

“I had the privilege of attending the Mexico Moose Lodge on Tuesday evening and meeting some of its great members,” Balsalmo said. “We are thankful for their donation of school supplies for our students and staff. We appreciate their generosity and support of Hawthorne Elementary.”

McMillan principal Anne Billington was equally effusive in her gratitude.
“Their generous gift is greatly appreciated, and all supplies will be put to good use,” Billington said. “We want to express our sincere thanks to all who were involved in collecting the supplies for our little ones. We are so excited for the 2022-2023 school year.”

Shaw recognized the grateful response which further confirmed the move was a good one by the Mexico Moose Lodge.

“Some of us have teacher friends and we see they put their wish lists on Amazon for their classroom,” Shaw said. “There is a possibility of doing it every year. It’s within one of our community services directives.”
