NC ROUNDUP: North Callaway’s Schmauch takes final top-15 spot at Linn

Posted

Pressley Schmauch gave North Callaway a top-15 finisher on Saturday.

At the Linn Invitational, Schmauch ran to a 15th-place time of 22:35.27 to lead the Ladybirds’ 10th place-finish as a team.

She was one spot behind Paris’ Mairyn Kinnaman by 12 seconds and was ahead of Moberly’s Anna Rivera by about three seconds.

North Callaway’s next best finisher was Grace Rasmussen at 41st place and Brendan Reinhard had the top finish for the 13th-place boys at 58th place.

Elsberry won the boys team title and St. Charles West took the girls crown.

Volleyball

History was made twice for the North Callaway volleyball program on Saturday.

The Ladybirds finished second place at the Calvary Lutheran Tournament in Jefferson City after winning two of their three matches. Senior Ellie Pezold broke the school’s single match service ace record in the team’s first victory against New Bloomfield.

Head coach Andrew Klein said Saturday was such a team effort, especially when North Callaway was locked in a battle with host Calvary Lutheran in its second match. The Ladybirds had already lost a four-set match (20-25, 23-25, 25-21 and 14-25) Thursday at home to the Lady Lions. This time, North Callaway won a tiebreaker after losing the first set 26-24 but tying the match with a 25-22 second set.

North Callaway had a decisive victory against inaugural program New Bloomfield this season and had already broken the single match service ace record in that same match. History repeated itself in the Ladybirds’ first contest against the Lady Wildcats, which they won 25-6 and 25-5.

Sophomore Jaden Smithee gave herself an early career highlight in the first meeting by collecting 10 service aces to break former Sterling College player Collen Meffert’s record of eight. The senior Pezold set the new record at 11.

“Ellie is the ultimate leader and competitor,” Klein said. “She deserves her name in the record books at North Callaway.”

The Ladybirds lost in the championship match to Dixon by scores of 25-13 and 25-19 to Dixon.

North Callaway (3-5) played at Intensity Homeschool on Monday and will have its rematch with Eastern Missouri Conference foe Montgomery County on Thursday in Montgomery City.
