Montgomery County couldn’t miss in the first quarter against the North Callaway boys on Thursday.
The Wildcats only missed a 3-pointer and 2-pointer but made five 3-pointers in the first eight minutes to take a 24-9 lead and end the Thunderbirds’ season with a 62-45 score in the Class 3 District 7 semifinals in New Bloomfield. North Callaway outscored Montgomery 24-21 in the next two quarters, but the damage was already done.
“A lot of teams would have quit, but our boys didn’t quit,” head coach Matt Miller said.
Senior Sam Pezold capped his career as the program’s all-time leading scorer with 18 points and four 3-pointers, topping off his record points total at 1,395. Senior Paul Russell finished with nine points on three 3-pointers, including one that cut Montgomery’s lead in the second half to seven at around six minutes left, making Miller believe the Thunderbirds had a shot to upset the No. 1 seed even then. Senior Isiah Craighead added nine points and four steals.
Clayton Parker led Montgomery (21-6) with 23 points, and Jay Rodgers followed with 16 points on four 3-pointers.
North Callaway ends its season with a 10-18 record and by winning four of its final six games.
