The North Callaway boys had several qualify for state this week but so many that came up short.
In the Class 1 District 3 tournament that was run Friday and Saturday in Marceline, five top-10 schools appeared and at least four top-10 wrestlers were in eight of the 14 weight classes. Still, the Thunderbirds had three qualify for the Class 1 state meet that starts at 8:15 a.m. Wednesday at Mizzou Arena in Columbia, including second-place Lane Kimbley at 138 pounds and Casper Safranski at 190 and third-place Collin Moore at 144.
Kimbley goes for his fourth career state medal — third-place last year — and possibly his first career state title, Safranski returns after making it last year and Moore will make his debut.
Head coach Ronnie Kimbley said he had six boys make it to the blood rounds (consolation bracket semifinals) on the second day, but only Moore made it to state. Kimbley said this points to how tough the competition was and could have meant different fortunes for boys like Wyatt Haden, Ben Haubner and Gunner Wenneker.
“The team wrestled tough and gave it all that they had,” Kimbley said. “I was pleased with the effort and if a couple things had gone a little different, I think we would have qualified a couple more.”
Kimbley is pleased with how North Callaway finished fifth out of 16 schools in the team standings with 86 points.
