Head coach Ronnie Kimbley saw a good day from sophomore Brooke Giboney and first-year junior wrestler Abigail Schmidt.

“They both started slow,” Kimbley said. “You could tell they weren’t quite awake, but all in all, they both got better and better throughout the day. That’s really what’s all about.”

Giboney has won medals for North Callaway following her freshman season on the mat. She managed to earn fifth place at 105A to miss a medal but her first two matches were losses against returning state qualifiers — Hallsville’s Candace Calvert and reigning Holden medalist Haley Brooks. After losing via major decision and pinfall, Giboney won her next match by pinfall and then defeated returning Battle state qualifier Natalie Shea by a 6-5 decision.

“Wrestling out of positions, they did that well,” Kimbley said. “(Brooke’s) last match, she opened up and actually took some shots, had a couple scramble positions and wrestled well out of those positions,” Kimbley said. “It was a very smart match and well-wrestled.”

Schmidt went into her final match of the day 1-3 at 170B&C and closed the day on a positive note with a pinfall over Waynesville’s Aylen Stark in the first minute. Kimbley said Schmidt did well against bigger Class 2 schools.

“In (Abbie’s) last match, she got into a position and didn’t know how to wrestle out of that and we talked her through it,” Kimbley said. “We’re still learning, but as far as effort goes, it was great.”

As for the rest of the season, Kimbley said Giboney is going for a district spot after just being a round or two short last season, and Schmidt is trying to “compete every match.”
