The Community R-6 boys program made big strides this season.
After seven straight seasons of losing records, the Trojans finished at 14-14 for its best season since their 2015 district championship team with a record of 23-5. Two years ago, they were 5-20 and last year were 8-18 in head coach Tad Shotten’s first season at Community before two all-Central Activities Conference players — senior Gavin Allen and junior Mason Carroll — led the Trojans this year to a close 59-58 district-semifinal loss to Class 1 No. 7 Higbee.
Allen managed to become the latest member of the Trojan 1,000-point club in Community’s 67-30 district victory against Columbia Independent. He followed his first-team selection last year with another this season after averaging 16 points and 13.5 rebounds per game to be the Trojans’ leading scorer and rebounder.
“He carried a lot of the scoring and rebounding burden for us,” Shotten said. “Gavin had several standout games where he would score 20-30 points. He was consistently one of the better players in the conference.”
Carroll earned a spot on the all-CAC team as an honorable mention as he hit the most 3-pointers for the team and was the second-best scorer and rebounder behind Allen, averaging 12.5 points and eight rebounds. He scored a career-high 37 points this season in a 64-47 win at Prairie Home/Bunceton.
“Both are terrific kids that dedicate a lot of time to athletics,” Shotten said. “I am happy for them to see the rewards of all their hard work.”
