Parks and Recreation looking for more help

The Mexico Parks and Recreation Department has two new employees but the “Help Wanted” sign is still in the window.

Parks and Recreation Director Chad Shoemaker told Park Board members at the monthly meeting last week one employee has already started, and another person will begin work later this month. However, the department is now looking for a new recreation director, and another long-time employee has submitted their resignation.

The city is looking to replace former Recreation Director Seth Cooke, who left to take a similar position with the Mexico YMCA. Cooke’s last day with the city was Nov. 30. Cooke is also taking some of the city’s programming with him, particularly the adaptive recreation program. Shoemaker said the population who participates in the adaptive recreation program won’t notice much difference.

“We’ll still support those things,” Shoemaker told board members. “We’ll still provide spots for them just like we did before and opportunities like we did before. And we’ll work with Seth on those just like we did before.”

Shoemaker said before Cooke’s departure there were already some discussions about moving more programs over to The Y.

“We were already in talks with The Y to co-brand some of those programs anyway,” Shoemaker said. “From that perspective, it’s worked out really well.”

The department also will be replacing a long-time serving employee who is leaving to pursue an opportunity. Shoemaker said the city has already received one resume but encouraged board members to put the word out. He said even if they don’t have a background in parks they could still be a fit.

“If you know anybody, keep sending them our way,” Shoemaker said. “You never know who might have a degree in something related that we could make work.”

Shoemaker said it would be an ideal fit for a local person.

“I would love to give what I think is a good job to someone from Mexico,” Shoemaker said. “We’d love to put a local person in that position. If we don’t have people from Mexico ask for the job we can’t give it to them.”
