Pezold becomes North Callaway boys all-time leading scorer in exciting win at Bowling Green

It took about four minutes on Thursday for Sam Pezold to secure the North Callaway boys program all-time scoring record, but the excitement didn’t end there.

Pezold led the way in Bowling Green with 23 points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals, but Paul Russell nailed a go-ahead 3-pointer with about 17 seconds left to help the Thunderbirds knock off the Eastern Missouri Conference Bobcats 66-64 in their regular season finale.

Before that rush in the final seconds, Pezold scored his seventh point in the first quarter to officially surpass the scoring record of 1,351 set by current North Central Missouri College player Matthew Weber a season ago. Pezold’s record sits at 1,368 going into North Callaway’s 6 p.m. Tuesday matchup with New Bloomfield (8-16) in the Class 3 District 7 tournament in New Bloomfield.

Along the way, Isiah Craighead had 12 points and four assists for North Callaway (9-17, 6-4 EMO), and Jace Eskew and Zach Gipson led Bowling Green (8-16, 5-4 EMO) with 16 and 13 points, respectively. Then, with North Callaway down, Russell was set up for a play and hit a shot from downtown.

“Paul hit the biggest clutch shot of his career,” head coach Matt Miller said. “It’s good to have momentum going into districts.”

North Callaway hopes the third time's the charm against New Bloomfield as it has lost twice to the Wildcats this season, 56-48 and then 53-51.

North Callaway girls overcome bad quarter for victory in Bowling Green

Thursday’s game was too close for comfort for the North Callaway girls but stifled a Bowling Green comeback.

The Ladybirds won 56-32 at the Eastern Missouri Conference Lady Bobcats despite allowing them to claw within six points after a 20-point third quarter. Kaelyn Charlton scored 18 of her game-high 22 points for Bowling Green in the eight minutes, outscoring North Callaway by 13 points.

North Callaway (18-8, 8-2 EMO) answered with a 20-2 fourth quarter, returning to the strong defense that allowed less than 10 points in the first half.

Natalie Shryock led the Ladybirds with 15 points and five 3-pointers, Riley Blevins followed with 12 points, eight rebounds and four steals, and Lakyn Hartley finished with 11 points and five rebounds.

Head coach Andrew Klein complimented his veteran leadership that didn’t panic after one bad quarter and pushed Bowling Green (5-19, 3-6 EMO) far away again on the scoreboard.

North Callaway goes into its Class 3 District 7 matchup at 6 p.m. Monday with Hermann (15-11) the winner in eight of its previous nine games. The Ladybirds defeated Hermann 59-50 earlier in the season.
