Relay For Life plans ice cream social

With the 2022 Relay for Life closing in, the organization decided it was as good a time as any to get their ice cream on.

So 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, a Relay for Life Survivors Ice Cream Social is planned for Southside Church Fellowship Hall, 2100 Lakeview Road. Survivor T-shirts will be available for pick up.

Event chair for the Relay for Life of Audrain County Nancy Early said the social will run until all the ice cream runs out.

“This is for survivors and caregivers and anyone else who wants to come – we don’t tell anyone they aren’t welcome,” Early said. “It’s a recognition for our survivors and caregivers. It’s also another opportunity for other survivors to come out and sign up (for Relay for Life) and pick up their T-shirts.”

Early said the organization has held a variety of events and it has raised $30,659.37 for this year’s drive for the American Cancer Society.

“Our committee goal is $30,000, but the American Cancer Society set it at $50,000,” Early said. “But we’ve reached what we wanted to reach. I am very satisfied.”

The Relay for Life will have Friends Fighting As One host a dessert auction, also at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 6, at the Audrain County Courthouse basement.

Donated desserts will be bid on as part of a Relay for Life fundraiser.

The following day, Sept. 7, Early wants to encourage the community to wear purple.

On Sept. 4, there will be a window decorating contest – Paint the Town Purple – and Early said that they are encouraging businesses and individuals to be involved.

Interested persons can register for that by calling 573-473-8241.

“It doesn’t cost anything, but your windows have to be decorated before the fifth and we will judge them on the sixth,” Early said.

The Relay for Life of Audrain County is set for 6 – 10 p.m. Sept. 10 on the East Side of Town Square beginning with the opening ceremony followed by the Survivor’s Lap immediately following. Entertainment during the evening will be provided by Keben Nance and Kelly Stanford.

Mexico native Kelly Hooper will perform an undetermined act during the relay.
“It’s an evening of fun and food and celebration,” Early said. “It’s about sharing a lot of memories.”

Kids’ games, food and an Irish auction will be some of the amenities on site while the organization celebrates 25 years of the relay.

To submit donations, they can contact Early at 573-721-6247 or Chris Crawford at 573-473-2662 or one can visit relayforlife.org/audrainmo. Registration for the Relay can also be made online.
