The North Callaway boys thought Friday's performance was an improvement from their previous one.
The Thunderbirds were coming off a season-high 31 turnovers in a loss to Russellville and only finished with 11 turnovers at home against Eastern Missouri Conference foe Clopton but lost 75-52. The Hawks, who return their top four scorers from a state quarterfinals team that was eliminated by state champion Salisbury, were led by Chase Hall's 28 points and seven 3-pointers.
"We did a better job of handling the pressure," North Callaway head coach Matt Miller said. "We just didn't make the shots."
Clopton (12-4, 5-0 EMO) used full-court pressure that didn't prevent Sam Pezold from finishing with 16 points, six rebounds and five steals to lead North Callaway (3-12, 2-3 EMO). Isiah Craighead followed with 10 points off the bench as he continues to recover from injury.
Kain Eivins had 15 points for Clopton, and Josh Harvey had 11 points and three 3-pointers to help turn a 15-13 lead after the first quarter into a 35-23 halftime advantage.
North Callaway opens the Bowling Green tournament at 6:50 p.m. Tuesday in the high school gym against the host Bobcats (4-10).
