TENNIS ROUNDUP: Mexico prepares for districts in 5-4 loss at North Point

Posted

It was feeling a lot like districts on Wednesday for Mexico boys tennis.

The Bulldogs would like to win in May as they lost at North Point 5-4, but they had the chance to play district rules, including singles matches going three sets and doubles going eight games. Declan Gleeson won both of his matches via tiebreakers, and Quaid Grubb also won via tiebreaker.

In singles, Gleeson and Grubb won via a 2-1 tiebreaker and Brendan McKeown won 2-0. In doubles, Gleeson and McKeown won by a 9-8 tiebreaker.

“This felt like a district match and it will help when we get to the real thing in a few weeks,” head coach Tony Senor said. “Declan played a total of 43 games in today's match. He had to dig deep to pull out the win. We are looking at closing the gap to win against North Point at districts.”

In junior varsity doubles, where Mexico won four out of eight matches, Brennan Beasley and Christian Frederickson won 7-6, Brixton Goerne and Carter Blackburn won 6-4, and Trevor Wright and Jonathan St. Martin won 6-3, and Briian Bynum and Skyler Shaw won 7-5.

Mexico (1-1 NCMC) hosts North Central Missouri Conference foe Moberly (3-2, 0-1 NCMC) at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Missouri Military Academy sweeps new program at Maplewood-Richmond Heights

Missouri Military Academy tennis took care of business on Monday.

The Colonels won 9-0 at Maplewood-Richmond Heights (0-3) in St. Louis, only losing two games in nine matches. MMA (3-1) defeated a program that head coach Brad Smith said just started this year.

“They are a new team started earlier this year due to student interest,” Smith said. “They started a club, then moved to weekly practice, then eventually acquired enough passion to start a team. They are young and have a bright future ahead of them. Our cadets were kind and helpful to their new players, giving them encouragement and advice.”

Among the singles winners were Patricio Bravo Knobloch, Gorka Yarte, Samuel Way, Francisco De La Maza, Nathan Dempsey and Ernesto De La Maza. The Colonel doubles pairs that won were Bravo Knobloch and Way, Yarte and Francisco De La Maza, and Dempsey and Ernesto De La Maza.

MMA plays in the Hannibal Invitational today.

Bulldogs lose tight 5-4 match at Boonville

Mexico had the usual good production from its top two players but didn’t have enough for a win on Tuesday.

Brendan McKeown and Declan Gleeson won their singles matches and doubles match together as the Bulldogs lost 5-4 at Boonville (4-2).

Zeven Ruiz was the other Mexico (2-5) winner as he took his singles match 8-2. McKeown won his singles match 8-1, Gleeson won a tight singles contest 9-8 and the pair won doubles 8-2.

“Brendan and Declan have been playing very well this season,” head coach Tony Senor said. “Brendan took care of business with an 8-1 victory in singles, and Declan won a close match in tiebreaker 9-8. To compete like this every night will help them when they get to conference and in district play.”

On Tuesday, Brixton Goerne and Trevor Wright won junior varsity doubles against Boonville 8-7 and Skylar Shaw and Jonathan St. Martin also won their doubles match 6-4.
