Not only is the nine-game losing streak behind the North Callaway boys, they go for a trophy Saturday.
The Thunderbirds defeated Eastern Missouri Conference foe Silex 51-42 on Thursday after seniors Paul Russell and Sam Pezold combined to go 8-for-8 from the free-throw line in the final minute, contributing to a 11-for-12 clip in the second half. North Callaway faces another conference foe Elsberry (7-11) at 1 p.m. Saturday for fifth place.
Head coach Matt Miller said achieving victory is the most important thing even if the game wasn’t pretty all throughout. North Callaway (4-13) actually had a five-point lead until Silex cut the margin to one with about 1:30 left in the game. Then, he said his seniors took over as Russell made some free throws, stole the ball and was fouled for two more free throws to start putting Silex (2-11) away.
Senior Isiah Craighead led North Callaway with 20 points, 10 rebounds and six steals, Pezold had 12 points, 12 rebounds and six assists, and Austin Brown added nine points on three 3-pointers.
