Indians advance in Tony Lenzini
On Tuesday, the Van-Far boys took their first step in defending their title.
The Indians won the Tony Lenzini tournament in Palmyra a season ago and won their first-round game against Clark County (5-8) 64-43.
Nikos Connaway led Van-Far (10-2) with 20 points, and Pacey Reading followed with 17 points.
Van-Far had their next game against Canton (10-4) moved back a day to 6 p.m. today after a winter weather cancellation, with the winner playing for the championship at 8 p.m. today and the loser playing for third place at 5 p.m. today.
After the Palmyra tournament, Van-Far opens next week’s Bowling Green tournament as the No. 1 seed and plays Eastern Missouri Conference foe Silex (2-9) at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the high school gym.
Lady Indians bounced out of tournament
The Van-Far girls continue to search for a victory for the first time in a while.
The Lady Indians’ losing streak extended to 11 games after losing both of their Tony Lenzini tournament games in Palmyra 69-37 to top seed and Class 3 No. 5 Palmyra and then 41-29 to Highland.
Carmen Wilburn and Elliott Utterback led Van-Far (1-12) in both games, starting against Palmyra (10-3) with Wilburn’s 17 points and Utterback’s 11 points and four rebounds. Chloe Zumwalt followed with nine points and seven rebounds. Head coach Heather Minter said the second quarter made a difference since Palmyra outscored the Lady Indians 24-1.
“In the second half, we were able to settle down and get some great looks but had dug ourselves too deep of a hole to get out of,” Minter said.
Wilburn and Utterback each had eight points against Highland (9-4) as Van-Far struggled to score until the second half.
Van-Far plays the top seed again in the first round of a tournament when it begins the Bowling Green tournament at 5:30 p.m. Monday against Eastern Missouri Conference foe Clopton (10-4), who received votes in the most recent Class 2 state poll, in the high school gym.
