The Van-Far football team narrowly fell to the Louisiana Bulldogs (1-4) on Friday night, losing 35-28.
Van-Far kept the game close throughout, but couldn’t grab the lead in the end due to continued miscues. The Indians fell to 0-3 overall. They travel to South Callaway this Friday. Kick off is 7 p.m.
Louisiana improved to 1-4.
Both teams traded scores early — the Bulldogs struck first, ending the first quarter up 6-0. Van-Far and Louisiana both scored in the second quarter — Tony Garland rushed for a one-yard touchdown — ending the half with a score of 14-6.
Garland tossed a 45 yard touchdown to LaTrell Wright in the third, but Louisiana added two touchdowns of its own.
Van-Far’s offense turned it up in the fourth quarter, putting up 14 points on touchdown runs by Bryson Lay and Garrett Schmidt, but couldn’t take the win, partly due to a failed onside kick.
“Our players were playing really good football,” Van-Far head coach John Kliewer said. “The penalties when we had them, they were big moments for us and that’s what hurt us.”
Lay starred for Van-Far on Friday, rushing 24 times for 128 yards and a score. LaTrell Wright caught three passes for 57 yards and a score, along with 37 rushing yards.
Defensive end and tight end Austin Taylor missed most of the game due to an injury in a car accident.
Linebacker Brandon Eoff missed all of last week’s practices after an injury last week and missed the Louisiana game. Kliewer says he’s still waiting to hear more on Eoff’s status going forward.
